Skeleton Crew: A Live-Scored Film Screening

  • The Custer Beacon 351 Washington St Custer United States (map)

Last year, Skeleton Crew - featuring Chicago Modular Synthesist Chris Puente and local trumpeter/keyboardist Alex Massa - rolled up to Custer to perform a live original score to the original 1925 film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.

This year, Skeleton Crew returns to perform a live score to the 1920 horror film ’The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’.

Considered the quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari tells the story of an insane hypnotist (Werner Krauss) who uses a somnambulist (Conrad Veidt) to commit murders. The film features a dark and twisted visual style, with sharp-pointed forms, oblique and curving lines, structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles, and shadows and streaks of light painted directly onto the sets.

Considered one of the first great horror films in history, Skeleton Crew’s knack for creating dissonant, spooky, and sometimes disturbing sounds will pair perfectly as we kick-start the Halloween weekend.
